W.W. Grainger, Inc.

Engineers sweat the details. W.W. Grainger, Inc., a company founded by engineers in 1927, continues to scrutinize the details of every aspect of their business and engineers every problem. They expect no less from their insurance broker.

TOOLS FOR GROWTH

Ron Cooley, Director of Risk Management, describes the early meetings with Lockton. "What we liked about Lockton right from the start was that they focused precisely on what we’d asked for in our RFP in 2002. We made a leap of faith and awarded them our property and aviation business."

By 2005, any reluctance about going with the company had disappeared and Lockton was awarded casualty business, too. Ron says, "They immediately increased coverage at a lower premium."

Lockton then went to work on an ongoing challenge. Ron explains, "We had struggled to consolidate our Canadian acquisition into our U.S. coverage. Our caveat was that combined coverage had to be as good or better with costs the same or better. Lockton’s predecessor had tried to accomplish it. The result was always that combined program would cost more or we’d sacrifice coverage."

But by leveraging relationships and thinking innovatively, Lockton engineered a unifying program that increased coverage and reduced costs.

Ron says, "They did it with time, effort, and attention to details."

W.W. Grainger, Inc., a wholesale electric motor sales and distribution business in 1927, has expanded to more than 800,000 products and repair parts today. Lockton serves them with property and casualty lines and aviation coverage.
In 2006, Grainger expanded beyond its North American footprint to include facilities in China. Ron states, "Our future growth is outside the U.S. We need a broker with global capabilities and seamless execution."

Lockton accompanied Grainger to China and Hong Kong and enlisted global resources there to help facilitate that expansion.

Ron emphasizes, "It’s this consultative talent and partnership that we value most about Lockton."
